Office Hours with Thai Medical Historian Pierce Salguero @ Blue Lotus Thai Healing Studies | Chicago | Illinois | United States

Blue Lotus is thrilled to announce that Pierce Salguero, writer, historian, and professor of the history and culture of Asian medicine, will be visiting and teaching our Sangha this coming March.

This special workshop is like having office hours with your favorite professor.  Pierce is fun, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable about Thailand, Buddhism, and Asian medicine.  In his freewheeling lecture / discussion style, Pierce will explain, from a historians perspective, how politics, economics, culture and geography have given rise to the texts and concepts that have moved through time to become modern practices of Thai medicine, Ayurveda, Yoga, Chinese medicine and Buddhism.

Along with your registration, we will mail you a copy of the updated version of his book Traditional Thai Medicine: Buddhism, Animism, Yoga and Ayurveda. We encourage you to read this book, as it will enrich your experience and help you get even more out of it.

Jessica, Jenn and Paul went out to Philadelphia earlier this spring and sat with a small group of Thai practitioners in Pierce’s basement and talked about the history of Thai medicine, Buddhism and the modern practice of Thai bodywork. We were mesmerized for five days as Pierce, regaled us with stories, facts and insights, helping us to contextualize this practice that we love so much. He helped us to understand where the practice comes from, how it lives in the culture of Thailand and how it is changing even today. The topics that he will cover when he comes to Chicago are the following:

Buddhism & Spirit Healing: We will learn about the Buddhist foundations of Thai healing, including the history and practice of specific healing meditations, chants, and other means of alleviating mental and physical suffering within the Buddhist framework. A large part of traditional medicine in Thailand involves engaging with the spirit world, so we will also focus on understanding Thai healing magic, rituals of protection, spirit invocation, exorcism, magic charms, amulets, and other aspects of indigenous Thai spirit healing.

Thai Healing Culture: Specific topics include “wai khru” ceremonies, altars and other sacred spaces, and Thai medical concepts and vocabulary. We will delve into these and other aspects of the culture of Thai healing, with emphasis on “culturally translating” Thai traditions to fit with participants’ own teaching and practice goals

Thai Medical History: Familiarity with the history of Thai medicine is crucial to being able to teach the Thai healing arts with integrity and depth. The workshop is dedicated to providing participants with the tools to separate fact from myth, and to deepening the factual knowledge they can share with their own students.

Connections with India and China: One area that many students, practitioners, and teachers of Thai healing arts are confused about is the connections between Thai medicine and other Asian traditions such as hatha-yoga, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various forms of Buddhism. This part of the workshop is particularly helpful for practitioners of other complementary-alternative modalities to understand how Thai medicine fits with these practices.

In this workshop, Pierce will be referencing his book:
2016, Traditional Thai Medicine: Buddhism, Animism, Yoga, Ayurveda, Revised edition (Bangkok: White Lotus Press). [Amazon] — Revised version of his MA thesis. First edition published by Hohm Press in 2007.
